"Off the Cuff"

Bangles may be a classic accessory, but this season it’s broad bracelets and cuffs that you should opt for.

I have always been crazy about jewelry and I don’t mean the expensive stuff but distinctive costume jewelry made out of all kind of materials and stones. It brings enormous life and energy to any outfit, adding a personal touch by making the outfit authentic, thus truly yours. Jewelry wardrobe has become just as essential as the shoe closet or a bag cupboard. We can all agree that jewelry is the easiest accessory to carry with you and transform the appearance of an outfit from day to night. You can start putting together your jewelry collection with this year’s must have- bangle cuffs. I find some of the greatest, one of a kind pieces in local vintage stores, ethnic shops or my mom’s jewelry wardrobe.

It is often said that ‘the bigger, the better’! That’s certainly the way to go with your accessories, if you are someone who likes to keep up with the latest trends. It’s not just neckpieces and rings, but bracelets too are getting bigger this season. And they are not only getting bigger on the popularity scale, but are getting bigger and broader in size too. In fact everyone from our Bollywood divas Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta, Neha Dhupia, Sameera Reddy, Shamita Shetty to Hollywood stars Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna have been spotted with either a broad bracelet or a broad cuff.

They are very versatile and can take you from day to night, “Cuffs not only make a cool and fun statement if worn during the day, but also give a touch of sophistication if worn in the evenings. And to add a funkier touch, I would suggest wearing them on the forearm instead of the wrist.”
They are large, bold and can make a huge statement. They are an ‘in your face accessory’ and can be an easy fashion tool, to express ones personal style.” From round and oval bangles, to bracelets with toggle clasps, layered bracelets, watches styled like cuffs and bracelets, plastic and fabric bands and cuffs, there is plenty to choose from. “It’s also a good idea to bunch up bracelets and bangles, to create a dramatic look.

Designer Eina Ahluwalia considers them to be a more subtle accessory than a neckpiece or earrings, which are the first things your eyes fall on when you see someone. Being less distracting to the garment, Eina feels, “They can be used to accessorise garments that require subtle jewellery perfectly. And because it’s a broad cuff or bracelet, it still gives the wearer the opportunity to make an individualistic style statement.”

Of late, bracelets have increasingly become the symbol of elegance and beauty. They add grace to one's personality and make it more vivacious and lively. This is the reason that they are worn with great comfort and confidence. The key, however, is to wear lesser, but bigger and bolder pieces that make a statement. Validating this trend a jewellery designer says, “Broad bracelets are preferred as they are contemporary and an immediate style statement. They can be worn as a stand alone and can still be the centre of attraction. Broad bracelets should be worn without any other jewellery because in today’s time less is what enhances the look. Too much of anything kills the personality.”

So, if you are out looking for some extra chic accessories to team up your little black dress with for a party this evening, then bracelets or cuffs are the obvious choice to make.
