Bring on Beads

Going big, bold and colourful seems to be the new style mantra. Statement necklaces are in vogue and almost everyone is sporting one.

From the demure string of pearls to the funkier variety with coloured stones, glass or wooden beads and even touches of metal, nothing dresses up a plain outfit better.

- Opting for beads and stones is an inexpensive way to add style to anything you wear. People are fed up of wearing the same old diamonds and precious jewels. Instead they're sporting pearls and coloured beads.

- If you are wearing a printed outfit, you should go slow on your neckpiece. Instead jazz up a plain coloured outfit with a vibrant long layered necklace. Choose from beads in plastic, glass or vibrant stones.

- Flaunting just one bold neckpiece can make your look. If you have something vibrant round the neck, you should stick to small solitaires in the ear and a demure ring or watch on the hand. Try not to over accessorise.

- Long necklaces bring an element of fun and make an attractive accent for a casual attire. Choose contrasting jewellery instead of the same matching ones. Beads when paired with a vest and a skirt complete the bohemian look.

Bags go Bling

Check more designs
Out go sombre leather handbags, and in come designer clutches and totes embellished with semi-precious stones. If you are a woman who likes to accessorise with bags, bling is the word this season.
Most designers are going for semi-precious stones like quartz, smoky topaz, coral and turquoise and amethyst to embellish clutches or bags in neutral colours like dull gold, black grey, red and green.

"The market for designer bags has become very good now. Everybody is aware and they like to match their bags with their outfits," said designer Art-Apparel and Accessories.

Kukar, along with co-designer Camelia Dalal, have given a modern touch to evening bags by embellishing them with semi-precious stones and crystals. They also have bags fitted with kundan pieces so that it can match the jewellery.

"Accessory was given a stepmotherly treatment before. It was not connected with fashion so much. But now the market is booming. Big totes are very much in and clutches are always eternal. These bags compliment the overall attire," she said.

Designs mostly include minakari (enamel work) from Fatehpur and they are embellished with stones like unpolished ruby and emerald.

These days women prefer clutches as they are easy to carry and go with traditional as well as western wear. Clutches embedded with Swarovski crystals and genuine pearls are finding prominence among fashionistas.
These clutches give a classy look to your evening attire, adding a sense of elegance and style.

This new class of fashionistas is not only spending generously on accessories, it is even looking for variety as a result of which embroidered evening bags are also becoming popular. Women are often seen carrying zari and zardozi handbags at wedding receptions.

Let your skin glow

For skin that feels like rose petals, here are some quick care tips.

  • Boil cabbage in water. Strain it and use the water to wash your face to make your skin look radiant.

  • Mix yoghurt with cucumber water. Apply on your face and wash it off.

  •  Coconut milk is excellent for skin care, especially in winter. Take half a cup of coconut milk. Use half of it to apply it over the face and body. Mix the rest with red sandalwood powder, apply the paste on the face. It can also be applied all over the body. It exfoliates your skin.

  •  Is your skin looking dull and lifeless? Mix coconut water and thick pineapple juice. Add multani mitti and apply it over your face and body. Do not scrub vigorously; wash it off with ice cubes or cold water.

  •  Here's a way to refresh tired skin: Mix one teaspoon vinegar with one teaspoon rosewater. Apply on skin and leave for 10 minutes. Wash it off with ordinary water.

  •  Mix one teaspoon honey with one teaspoon tomato juice. Leave it on the face or body for 10 minutes and wash it off with ordinary water.

Office wear

Check more designs
Dress smartly keeping in mind the work culture of the office. If it's a corporate office, like a law firm, financial institution, etc. then opt for a sophisticated look - dark coloured, or pin striped suits with a pale shirt and a matching tie. Avoid prints, especially large and flowery ones. And if it's a media house or an advertising firm, a pair of denims and a smart shirt looks good.

Formal dinners

At formal dinners, you are most likely to bump into a number of your colleagues. Hence, the key is to dress smartly. Opt for a suit and team it with a solid coloured shirt. For a less formal do, wear denims with a shirt, or a tee with a blazer. Go for sober hues, not bold prints or jazzy colours.

Night Parties

A club or a disc calls for trendy dressing. Tees, figure hugging shirts (only if you've got the figure to flaunt), your sexiest pair of jeans, smart jackets, sneakers - the choice is unlimited. You can also pair a ganji with an open collar shirt, or a jacket, or a tee.

Casual lunches

Check with the party hosts whether there's any theme for the do. If not, then a pair of shorts or ripped jeans teamed with a tee works well. Footwear can range between sneakers, sandals or even chappals.

"Off the Cuff"

Bangles may be a classic accessory, but this season it’s broad bracelets and cuffs that you should opt for.

Check for more designs
I have always been crazy about jewelry and I don’t mean the expensive stuff but distinctive costume jewelry made out of all kind of materials and stones. It brings enormous life and energy to any outfit, adding a personal touch by making the outfit authentic, thus truly yours. Jewelry wardrobe has become just as essential as the shoe closet or a bag cupboard. We can all agree that jewelry is the easiest accessory to carry with you and transform the appearance of an outfit from day to night. You can start putting together your jewelry collection with this year’s must have- bangle cuffs. I find some of the greatest, one of a kind pieces in local vintage stores, ethnic shops or my mom’s jewelry wardrobe.

It is often said that ‘the bigger, the better’! That’s certainly the way to go with your accessories, if you are someone who likes to keep up with the latest trends. It’s not just neckpieces and rings, but bracelets too are getting bigger this season. And they are not only getting bigger on the popularity scale, but are getting bigger and broader in size too. In fact everyone from our Bollywood divas Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta, Neha Dhupia, Sameera Reddy, Shamita Shetty to Hollywood stars Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna have been spotted with either a broad bracelet or a broad cuff.

Check more designs
They are very versatile and can take you from day to night, “Cuffs not only make a cool and fun statement if worn during the day, but also give a touch of sophistication if worn in the evenings. And to add a funkier touch, I would suggest wearing them on the forearm instead of the wrist.”
They are large, bold and can make a huge statement. They are an ‘in your face accessory’ and can be an easy fashion tool, to express ones personal style.” From round and oval bangles, to bracelets with toggle clasps, layered bracelets, watches styled like cuffs and bracelets, plastic and fabric bands and cuffs, there is plenty to choose from. “It’s also a good idea to bunch up bracelets and bangles, to create a dramatic look.

Check more designs
Designer Eina Ahluwalia considers them to be a more subtle accessory than a neckpiece or earrings, which are the first things your eyes fall on when you see someone. Being less distracting to the garment, Eina feels, “They can be used to accessorise garments that require subtle jewellery perfectly. And because it’s a broad cuff or bracelet, it still gives the wearer the opportunity to make an individualistic style statement.”

Of late, bracelets have increasingly become the symbol of elegance and beauty. They add grace to one's personality and make it more vivacious and lively. This is the reason that they are worn with great comfort and confidence. The key, however, is to wear lesser, but bigger and bolder pieces that make a statement. Validating this trend a jewellery designer says, “Broad bracelets are preferred as they are contemporary and an immediate style statement. They can be worn as a stand alone and can still be the centre of attraction. Broad bracelets should be worn without any other jewellery because in today’s time less is what enhances the look. Too much of anything kills the personality.”

So, if you are out looking for some extra chic accessories to team up your little black dress with for a party this evening, then bracelets or cuffs are the obvious choice to make.

Rainbow colours are in

Wearing a wide range of colours from top to toe is in. We explore the rainbow...

If life was pigmented in basic blacks and whites, how boring would it be? Extremely, we must agree. Colours truly reflect the spirit of lives, and shoe designer Bruce Dunn agrees, “Colours play a very important role these days as they define the person you are.”

For example, when you see someone wearing a really bright colour, you get a vibrant aura from him/her. A brightly coloured shoe catches the eye easily, and most of the shoes that I have painted have been pretty colourful.” Are girls the ones who experiment with colours, or is it the boys? “Surprisingly, boys seem to like colours more than the girls do. As I said, people want something that catches attention, and I find boys taking full advantage of that,”

Gone are the days when you matched your clips with your dress and shoes. It’s the era of mix and match. I always suggest everyone to go for vibrant red clips, a yellow dress and, maybe, a bright green pair of chappals. When your outfit can make you feel fresh and good, then why stick to the basic blues and blacks and whites?”

Fashion designers are also captivated with colours. Bright shades in footwear are the in thing. From lipstick red to burnt orange and from fresh navys to sunflower yellows, pick a colour and you’ll get some accessory in it. Match your heels with your clutch, and make sure your dress is a contrast, and you are ready to kill. My most colourful pick has been a pair of multicoloured suede platforms from a local designer in Bali. Bright and hip, they lift a regular outfit and make it fun.
Do you feel men have started experimenting a lot with colours? “It’s the age of the metro-sexual guy. So, colours like pink, yellow, green and purple have wriggled into the male wardrobe. Yellow is singing at the top of its voice this season, and neons have whitened. The brights are on fire, and the entire spectrum of reds from purple to salmon pink is doing the rounds. I would say, dive into these shades and leave the boring behind.” We couldn’t agree more!

"Get noticed with funky shoes"

Black is clichéd and white, you’d better push right back into your closet. Bring out your blue suede shoes! Payless for shoes here..

Don’t believe us, check out what our B-town celebs have been sporting lately. Their shoe colours range from sunflower yellow, shades of green to purple and even sky blue. Yellow, though, appears to have caught everyone’s fancy.

Bollywood style queen Gauri Khan smartly teamed a pair of yellow-heeled shoes with a black cocktail dress and clutch. We also spotted designer Anna Singh wearing a black outfit and a pair of dainty yellow satin shoes. She had accessoried well with chunky gold jewellery and a multi-hued clutch. Twinkle Khanna took the trend to an award show in Bangkok. She walked in wearing a stunning fuschia outfit and yellow, peep-toe slip-ons. Even Shamita Shetty seems to be in love with yellow.

“Yellow was the biggest prediction since last fall and look at what a trend it’s become,” says shoe designer. Now here’s the best part. You don’t need to match your clothes and accessories with these coloured shoes. Just wear them, whatever the colour of your outfit. Rest assured, your footwear will definitely be a hit. It’s all about making a personal style statement.

Meanwhile, a suburban makeover store says it’s the vibrant and glossy yellow which is the colour of the season. “Team it with anything from black to any bright coloured outfit, it’s sure to make the wearer look good. There’s no hard and fast rule, you have to be innovative,” she says.

According to her, green is another ‘on-the-run’ colour, while purple, though in vogue, has not really caught on. And if you thought coloured shoes was completely a girlie thing, you’re wrong. Guys, too, are happily sporting footwear in colours ranging from deep red to green and aqua blue.

Speaking about this trend, actor Sudanshu Pandey says, “I’m glad it’s in vogue now. I love coloured footwear and now I can wear all my pairs regularly.” As for the next season, our experts predict deeper colours like maroon. “Purple will also continue in the season,” concludes.

Cotton brings the feel good factor

"Cotton has made a comeback in the fashion scene ."

It’s hot on the runway. It makes you look cool. It’s easy to mould, and the outcome is always stylish. Cotton couture is here to please everyone with stylish apparels that stand out in the crowd.

“Cotton is the easiest to carry off. There are not too many issues with the material, and it fits so well,” as said by a college student. Not surprising, therefore, is why cotton is on everyone’s hit list.
“There is no need to wear the same old, dull and boring cotton clothes. There are so many variations. For instance, self-print or self-embossing on cotton is really popular,” says owner of a cotton store.

What has enhanced the appeal of cotton is that it is not confined to saris and Indian wear any longer. Cropped jackets, pants and smart trench coats that are light as also chic are available in cotton as well. “Our city’s climate is pleasant, and one can enjoy wearing jackets or sleeveless depending on how cold or warm it gets. College goers love wearing big fitted jackets, asymmetrical shirts and even long dress shirts which are complete cotton and yet look so swanky,” says another store owner.
“There was a time, when people said that cotton was not dressy. But with sequins, lace, velvet and so many other things, cotton is super fun to wear for the day or for a date in the evening. Cotton dresses are also very beautiful, and there are many things you can accessories them with,” says a team manager.

Two funky cotton fabrics mixed to make a kali kurta or playing with the yolks of the kurtas is very in. “It’s playful and something different. Lots of stores around the city have these kinds of kurtas, and they look beautiful on churidars, jeans or patialas. For the rains, it’s perfect, as the fabric is light and airy and dries up very easily,” says who owns a store for cotton fabrics.

“This is the only fabric no one is allergic to! Look at the fashion of the West. Cotton is doing the rounds everywhere, and foreigners love the prints we do. Cotton bags and chapels which have cotton straps in various dyes and designs look very funky,” says Radhika Mehra, who owns a store of cotton fabrics.

Courtesy flexibility - after all, you can do any thing with cotton - and the comfort factor, cotton is back to being at the top. Are you wearing it?

Also now in trend is Egyptian cotton bedsheets try some from Linensbargins. These Egyptian cotton bedsheets make a wonderful addition o any bedroom decor. It is woven in single pic Insertion for a softer feel. To give it a rich look the hem is treated with a double needle stitch.

Dress to Impress

Here are a few tips for women who are all set to go out on their first date!
Has your guy finally gathered the courage to ask you out? And is this your first date? Then, invariably you will be in a state where you feel your wardrobe is empty. Don’t worry! Help is at hand. We offer you a list of dos and don’ts on your first date.

A first date is an impression-maker. Remember, he’s already seen you and now wants to know you. Let your clothes speak for you. The way you dress can tell a lot about the kind of person you are. Make sure you dress elegantly on your first date. No skin shows please!
If you wear a skirt, make sure it reaches at least to your knees. To go with it, wear a top that is not revealing. The way you dress and carry it off should make an impression on your date. It should also ease the pressure that is bound to be there on a first date.

Do not try and squeeze yourself into an LBD (little black dress). It is for sure not going to impress him. Your best option will be a simple flare skirt or denims clubbed with a good tee.
Don’t dress casually or formally. Go for a smart informal look that makes you look just right – not too bold nor understated. Stick to beige, mild blues, blacks or greens. Do not overuse any colour.

Most men like simple accessories. Do not experiment much. A simple stud can do the trick for you. Opt for shoes or sandals in subtle colours and make sure they aren’t in the same colour as that of your dress. If you are wearing stilettos, carry yourself well.

Avoid buying a new outfit when you dress for a first date. This can give the impression that you are trying too hard and will make your date wonder what the rest of your wardrobe looks like.

You can also consider wearing your lucky or favourite outfit. This might leave you more confident and boost your self-esteem at a time when you are likely to be a tad nervous.

To conclude, when you dress for a first date, make sure you don’t under or overdo it. Always dress in clothes that are neat, clean and ironed and make sure you leave your ‘crazy clothes’ in the cupboard. Lastly, whatever you wear, do not leave behind your smile. Carry it along all the while!

Back to School

Great deals on Back to School items at OfficeMaxIt's school time again! You're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these "new" worries only stick around for a little while. Let's find out more about going back to school.

The First Day
Most teachers kick off the school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class.

When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Pay close attention so you'll know if you need to raise your hand to ask a question and what the rules are about visiting the restroom.

You might already know a lot of people in your classes on the first day. But it's a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don't. Make the first move and you'll be glad you did and so will your new friend!

Moving to Middle School?
Sixth grade often signals a move to middle school or junior high, where you'll find lockers and maybe a homeroom. This is just what it sounds like - a classroom you'll go to each morning, kind of like your home in the school. In middle school, you might move from classroom to classroom for each subject. Your teachers know that this is a big change from elementary school and will help you adjust.

Most teachers let you pick your own seat on the first day, but by the second or third morning, they'll have mapped out a seating plan. It's a good idea to write down where your seat is in your notebook so you don't forget.

Feeling Good on Day One
Seeing friends you haven't seen in a while can make the first day a good one. You also can make the day feel special by wearing an outfit you like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on vacation, or your new sneakers put a spring in your step. If you wear a uniform, you might wear a favorite watch or piece of jewelry to show your personal style.

It can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the supplies you need. Some schools distribute supply lists before the year begins, so you can come stocked up on pencils, folders, and whatever else you'll be needing. Once you've covered the basics, you might tuck an extra dollar or two in your backpack for an emergency (like forgetting your lunch money). Or maybe you'd like to bring along a book or magazine to read while you're on the bus.

Whatever you put in your backpack, make sure you pack it the night before. This prevents the morning panic when you can't find your homework or lunch box. Speaking of lunch, that's something else that can help you feel good at school - whether it's the first day or the 100th day. Pack it the night before if you don't like what's on the menu at the cafeteria. Try to include a variety of foods in your packed lunch, especially fruits and vegetables.

Get Oriented
The first day of school is your first chance to find your way around a new school, or learn the pathways to new classes in your old school. It's a lot to learn in one day, so don't be surprised if you need a reminder or two.

It might help to write a few notes to yourself, so you'll remember the important stuff, like your locker combination and that lunch starts at 11:43, not 12:10. Before you know it, your fingers will fly as you open your locker and you won't have to check your notes to know what time lunch starts

What if you hate school by the end of day one? Teachers recommend giving things some time to sort themselves out - once you know your way around the building and get adjusted to the new routine, you'll probably feel better. If those feelings don't fade, talk to your mom, dad, teacher, or school counselor.

Here are a few final tips for a fantastic first day:

•Get enough sleep.
•Eat a healthy breakfast.
•Try your best.
•Develop good work habits, like writing down your assignments and turning in your homework on time.
•Take your time with school work. If you don't understand something, ask the teacher.
•Keep a sense of humor. One teacher we know shows his new students a picture of himself graduating high school - a grinning ape in a red graduation cap and gown. This usually makes the kids laugh, and it's a good way to remind them that school is fun!

"We all wear shoes, every day - we have to. So they are a very important part of your wardrobe. They say something about the way you hold your body. Shoes must be elegant, comfortable. They affect the person's personality,” Stuff.co.nz quoted him as saying.

The Malaysia-born craftsman has been designing shoes since he was just 11, but admits he still has battles with himself while trying to perfect his styles.

"I'm a perfectionist. I get angry and I lose my tempter, but only over shoes. My temper is very quick but there's never anything personal. If I lose my tempter with a member of staff, afterwards we'll go for a drink. Maybe I just love my shoes too much!" he added:

Jimmy, 40, recently revealed that it is never too late for people to start wearing heels, but they should not start off with skyscrapers.

"You should start with two or two and a half inches, get used to that first. But a lot of men, when they've been married for ten years, they walk in front of their wives,” he said.

"When a woman is wearing heels they have to walk more slowly, but sometimes their husbands won't wait for them,” he added.
